With the recent news of a 7th person discovered to be lost to the senseless violence of a serial killer who has terrorized our LGBTQ2S+ community here in Toronto, I think we should find a way to honour those we have recently lost , as well as those who we may never find or identify. I propose that during our community's most visible, colourful, joyful event, our Pride Parade that we wear black ( this includes accessorizing or wearing black in any way you see fit, there is no dress code) as we watch from the sidelines. This action will send a powerful message to those in Toronto, as well as the folks who watch our parade around the world that our community stands with survivors of violence, that we remember those we lost, that we stand vigilant against those who would do harm to our LGBTQ2S+ family (with special emphasis on the violence regularly directed towards the most vulnerable in our community especially trans women of colour and those who make a living from sex work), and that we will do everything we can to ensure this chapter of our history is never repeated or forgotten. Additionally we honour and acknowledge those queer and trans individuals whose identities are erased as they are misgendered in death.
This event is evolving as we go, if you have any advice, would like to get involved, or have an issue with the event or anything I've said here (or haven't said) please reach out so I can address your concerns.
