The lakes are currently at their highest point in history. The Ferry to Hanlans is currently out of service as much of the island is under water. You need to take the ferry to Center Island and walk. The majority of the path to the beach is covered in water. The water is not moving and mosquitoes are breeding like crazy. Be prepared to be eaten alive and don’t expect much activity.
A great place for a short afternoon get away that feels like you've left the city. You can even rent chairs and umbrellas on the weekends. It's not exclusively gay, but it's chill. It's worth a visit if you're from out of town.
