Angkor is quirky, colourful, and delicious. You may feel you’ve walked into a Cambodian version of Mars- scenic tear outs of National Geographic paper the walls alongside portraits of Angelina Jolie, Cher, Marilyn Monroe, and of Chef Chandra Eang’s grandparent- the Cambodian Prime Minister before the Khmer Rouge regime. Eang escaped from the Killing Fields where his siblings were beheaded, walking through the land mine fields for weeks until he made it to Thailand. Filled with land mines, but alive, he continued his studies of cuisine that he had started in his youth. Eang is a true Toronto eccentric, and his shiny clothes and big hair and excited mannerisms are the epitome of muchness, but his garlic fried eggplant, stir fried rice noodles, and fish recipes will have you scheduling another visit before your flight home. Chandra’s menu promises “the taste will knock you off your feet.” Every penny he makes in his humble shop goes to support landmine victims in Cambodia.
