Outed, the film which will be screened, is based on a true story of what happened when one man is outed by a tabloid newspaper in Uganda. It is a raw and unflinching story of violence directed towards LGBT people in that country. A trailer can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEo8PAGPBJM Note: the film contains graphic scenes.
Following the screening, Xtra will host a conversation on the importance of reflecting queer lives on screen in an era of profound political uncertainty, most directly in Uganda, but increasingly in countries where LGBT rights have been won in past decades. The conversation participants will be Kamoga Hassan, filmmaker and principal organizer of the Queer Kampala International Film Festival and Dale Sturgess from Rainbow Railroad, a Toronto based non-profit that assists LGBT people find routes to safety.
Xtra would like to thank community partners Imagine Cinemas Carlton, Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, Supporting Our Youth, Inside Out LGBT Film Festival, Glad Day Bookshop and Rainbow Railroad for their partnership in this project.
Imagine Cinema Carlton is a fully accessible facility for wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
